New solar water heating rebate available for Roseville’s PG&E customers

Pacific Gas & Electric customers in Roseville – an estimated 45,000 – can take advantage of a new statewide solar water heating rebate.

The goal of the program is to make installing a solar water heating system more affordable for home and business owners, with cash rebates of up to $1,875 for single-family homes and up to $500,000 for systems installed on commercial or multifamily buildings, according to a news release.

Solar water heating works in conjunction with a current water heater. The system collects heat from the sun and transfers it to a storage tank. The conventional water heater then draws the heated water out of solar storage and uses it for showers, dishwashers, washing machines and more.

The rebate program is a joint effort among PG&E, Southern California Gas Company, San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison.

A solar water heating system can offset up to 75 percent of water heating energy costs, making it cost-effective and eco-friendly, according to the release. Customers can also claim a 30 percent Federal Tax Credit that’s available on the installed cost of a solar water heating system, less the rebate.
